Multiple Choice Questions Set 1 with Answers and Rationale

  1. After I took your multiple choice quiz, I realized that I will probably have to study up on the literary devices that may be used in these texts. Synecdoche and metonymy are very similar, as they both deal with the representation of one term by another term, and I found it impossible to distinguish between the two. I think your questions, especially number 2 and number 5, were reminders not pick the most obvious choice immediately. It is always a good idea to close read the passage and distinguish between what is literal and what is figurative. Identifying the tone shift would have also been important for seeing how Christopher Martin’s character changed in question 5.

If there is one improvement you could make to your questions, it is to increase the number of types of questions you cover. I would like to have more practice with the Roman numeral questions because those questions take a lot of time. The possibility that the combination I want may not be present also consumes more time, adds to my uncertainty, and forces me to reassess which of the roman numerals I must have answered incorrectly.
